That did not become a legal issue until the GCA of 1968.

OfflineI was at the Met in Sept 2024, it was fantastic. Too much to see and too little time. I would love to spend more time there.
The 1886 and 1894 were displayed together with some rare side arms. Here are a couple of pictures.
I preferred the 1866 and 1873 in the cabinet opposite the Tiffany Winchesters, that is me in the picture. Bob Reabe told me I should have asked them to take the 1873 out of the case for a closer look
