Hello from northern Michigan.
This rifle popped up on Guns International and is being sold by The Winchester Grove for $8500. The only problem is that the gun was sold at RIA in Sept 2010 as Lot 1328 and at that time it had a 1/2 Round barrel, set triggers, a button mag and was chambered in 32 WCF.
But now the gun has a matted full octagon barrel, full length magazine, and the caliber is 25-20 WCF. The wood is absolutely the same and the discoloration on the receiver is identical and the screw heads on the left side of the receiver have not been turned.
You guys might want to put your wallet away and pass on this one.

Don Grove just bought this gun from the August Ward’s Auction for $6,703.00 plus 15% commission. They are both located in Dallas, Oregon. If it were me, I’d be packing that one up and returning it.

Thanks so much! I missed it at Wards. It sold for $4600 at the RIA auction in 2010.

Not a lot of meat left on the bone on that one, especially for a fraudulent gun. I think he did do pretty well on this one though:

That color cased hardened 1894 sold for a low price at Wards. I think he did very well.

That was a pretty sweet gun ten years ago, I like it just the way it was.

I talked to Don yesterday and he had just purchased the rifle from Ward’s and has pulled the item from his website. He does a lot of business both buying and selling via Ward’s and will be returning the rifle.

I totally get it that gun dealers have to make a living and are a good source of fine firearms for one time buyers or novice collectors, but if this isn’t a hint where to purchase firearms at wholesale prices–provided you still do your homework and don’t get carried away–I just don’t know what is.
I know this statement might prove controversial. But, as I get older, I’m increasingly just not a retail kind of guy when purchasing firearms.

Michael,
You do all of us a great service. I’m glad you let Don know, and he pulled that gun.
