I am still in search for Doc Pardee’s Winchester 73’s #644 and #19,243. All I have been able to find is the following…
Doc’s Rifles
The exact whereabouts of the rifle are unknown to me although #644 is believed to be out and about at gun shows. The descriptions of each are as follows;
Rifle #644
- blued 26″ octagon barrel
- brass front blade
- blued iron frame
- sling ring below butt stock
- cleaning rods in butt stock
- butt plate and maybe lever, nickel plated
- series of grooves on wrist of stock, paint? on left of stock, abrasions nicks and scratches on stock pieces, vertical scratches on both side plates
- finish and nickel plating worn.
Rifle #19,243
- part round part octagon barrel w/hooded front sight and tang peep
- frame, lever, forearm cap, butt plate, color case hardened
- loading gate and barrel blued
- engraved foliated scrolls on muzzle and breech
- left frame engraved, Presented to Dr. E.H. Pardee by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. 1876 “One Of One Thousand”
- cleaning rod in stock
- dents and slight scratching on forearm, rust on hammer, traces of rust…well used, rifling very worn
#644 should be the rifle used to shoot the 30 consecutive hits target published in 1873′.
#19,243 should be 1 of 1 thousand and maybe what was kept in the wood gun case below since it is addressed from Winchester.

However, I have decided to add this club to the 44-40 website here. This is an exclusive club for those that can provide to me a target that consist of a minimum of 30 consecutive shots (inside 4″) with the 44-40 cartridge, fired from between 100 to 110 yards. Can be open, ladder, peep scope, etc. Can also be smokeless or black powder loads. The point is to prove the cartridge, not the shooter’s eyesight…and to get some more participation!
I am also looking into getting some 5″ patches made….but so far it is a min 100 patches for about $200 That patch would be Doc’s target…colors and design yet to be determined.

Just ordered 10 patches @ $16.41 each. I will be a bit picky on who I award them.
1. 30 consecutive shot target must be sent to me for scoring, I will PM my address when the time comes.
2. Any arm chambered for the 44-40 cartridge
3. 100 to 110 yards
4. standing, sitting whatever floats your boat.
5. open, peep, tang, ladder, scope….whatever works for you to see the target.
6. must list load-out, powder, bullet etc.
7. I will score the target with Ballistic-X phone app.
8. If your target qualifies, I will send it back with a life size target patch (it better be)!
9. USE A CLEAN TARGET, no “extra holes”
10. more rules as needed…you guys crack me up with the things you do!

Posted with permission of the owner of #644. I elected to mark out the other two sn#s.
I am learning some interesting facts about this rifle. I should also be receiving copies of some letters/notes from Dr Pardee’s “shooting diary”, for lack of a better discription.

That is correct. If you have one, or have an original conversion to 44-40 (for whatever reason)….it is a custom. I have no idea why…but it is what it is…according to Lyman’s 49th. I have never seen evidence of one.

Interesting. I do have a Remington-Keene, and as to chambering, it is simply (factory) marked “.433”. I wouldn’t doubt some of my various .44-40’s have a bore diameter that mics to .433, however my Keene is in fact a .43 Spanish. I have never heard of one in .44-40. Given the other chamberings in the Keene were .45-70 and .40-65, I have difficulty picturing how one could be converted to .44-40. But if there is one, I’d love to see it.

That would be my thinking as well. If I had to convert one, I think there are better choices than the 44-40.
