New here but I do own a couple Winchester rifles. A 1907 Octagon barrels model 1894 in 30 WCF and a 1927 model 94 in 32 Win SPCL. My 1907 came with a period correct Lyman No 2 tang sight. The screws are in pretty rough shape, I ordered replacements and they do not fit. Everything I’ve read says they should be 12-28 and the screws I received from Brownell’s and Homestead are both 12-28 albeit 1/4″ too long. The screw in my rifle is definitely 10-24 and it has not been plugged and retaped to this size. Did some rifles come with 10-24 screws?

In answer to your question, No, they did not.  Winchester used the exact same thread pitch for all model 1894 (94) tang screws.  In fact, Winchester used the same thread pitch across all lever-action rifle models, with the only difference being the overall length of the screws.  Several different models used the exact same length tang screw.

I have quite the quandary then. This screw is most definitely 10-24 and it’s been in the gun long enough that the hole in the stock will no longer fit a 12-28 screw through it. The threaded hole in the bottom tang shows absolutely no signs of being welded shut or plugged and re-tapped. If it was then someone went through a lot of effort rather than just using the correct screw to begin with.

In your shoes, I would visit your local machine shop and ask them if they can make you a replacement screw.
