I was digging through my collection and had a question about a 20 in. late model 94 carbine that I have had for years. Ser.# 3159447 that has either a stainless or nickel receiver. The only blue parts are the barrel, mag tube & loading gate. I don’t know enough to know the difference between the two. When I bought this gun I was told the finish was done by Winchester which I took with a grain of salt. There are no marking to denote any special run. Hammer and top of bolt have engine turning. Inside of receiver looks “unblued” also. Finish looks like stainless to me, but I am wrong more that right. Anyone ever heard of such?

They made a series called “antique” about that time period and I believe some of them were plated. They would have a line of engraving on the receiver. Henry

If a magnet does not attract to the metal its stainless.

With an early 1970s serial number, my bet is that it is simply devoid of all the original finish. During that timeframe, the bluing did not adhere to the sintered steel receiver frame at all.
