Very Interesting! I have not ever encountered a Model 71 with a factory roll matter barrel until now. Please send me the serial numbers !!!

The solid red rubber Winchester recoil pad is not uncommon on the Model 71. I have seen at least a dozen or more of them installed.

Unfortunately, Cody has no records for the Model 71 other than the Polishing Room serialization records for numbers 1 – 23010.

Mine is an exact twin in condition to the one shown above.  Any idea of the value?  Not selling it, just curious.

The roll matted barrel is exceptionally rare for the Model 71.  In fact, the Model 71 is ultra rare with any special order feature, as it was offered in a “Special” (deluxe) variation which satisfied most people wanting a higher quality rifle.

In regards to the value, I do not know with any certainty how much of a premium the matted barrel will bring, but I will estimate that it is at least a 25% premium over an otherwise standard Special Model 71. So, with that in mind, maybe $5500 – $6000 ??

If you would, please PM me with the serial number, and a set of clear detailed pictures of the rifle.  I would really like to put it in my survey and research notes.

Just when we think we’ve seen them all, you guys keep pulling out interesting variations from the closet. Those are great M71’s and to have two of them show up on this thread is quite interesting.

Bert – do you see matted barrels on any of the models out this late? It seems like out past the 20’s the scarce features such as a matted barrel are not found very often.

We may want to make sure Tom T. gets the data on these for his 71 research.

Gary,

In answer to your question, No, I have not ever seen matted barrels that late before now.  For the most part, special order features took a serious dive in the early part of the 1930s, and all but disappeared Post WW II.  I share my survey with Tom T. on a regular basis.

The gun pictured above is the gun I am referring to. The person above copied the picture off the auction site it was purchased from.

Your statement “Mine is an exact twin in condition to the one shown above” in a previous post had me thinking that they were two such rifles.

Can you post the auction link so that I can view the other pictures?

Thanks,

Bert
