Hmmm…I’m wondering how many of these so-called “John Hart” guns really exist??
Several of the old western actors sold guns at Gun Shows, you got a personal autographed picture and a old Colt or Winchester that they owned. Most of the guns were recently purchased and sold with only a modest mark up, the value of these guns is not the same as a gun that was used in a movie or TV show. Tulsa used to have an old Cowboy actor present for paid autographed pictures, maybe one of his “old guns”. They would announce his name and table number on the PA, it was a draw for the Gun Show and extra money for a retired actor. As to how many are out there, your guess is as good as mine, lots. T/R
Years ago there was a gun shop on Sunset Blvd here in Hollywood that was full of stuff like this. Lots of celebrity owned Winchesters and Colts many of which came with this sort of paperwork. Gifting, trading and collecting firearms was much more acceptable back in the day and many of the pieces in this shop came from estate collections and it wasn’t unusual to see multiple pieces from the same collection with similar documentation.
I was much younger then and had no money, so I just went in and drooled a lot. Never purchased any of them.
I do own a Beretta 84FS that was once won in a celebrity shooting contest in the 70’s by Susanne Plechette, but that doesn’t exactly have the same panache as the Lone Ranger’s gun.

Though they probably didn’t make personal appearances at shows, some retired Texas Rangers did exactly the same thing–bought new guns they had never carried on duty, then resold them with a “provenance” letter.
