I own a Short 22″ round barreled Winchester Model 1876 rifle in 40-60 WCF that is British proofed. My question to all out there is this, what is the measurement across the muzzel of a “standard” and a “Heavy” round barrel? This rifle is nothing fancy. It probably was used for hunting in Africa or India for the “POT”, as the caliber is to light for any “Dangerous Game”. I’m curious as to the barrel dimension because this particular rifle is very heavy in weight for a short rifle. Thanks all.

Ive got an 1876 round barrel rifle in 45-60 that has a 26″ barrel. The dimension of the barrel at the muzzle is 0.815″. If assuming all barrel tapers are the same and yours may have originally been 28″, with 6″ removed, at 6″ from the muzzle mine measures 0.847″. At the receiver the barrel is 0.950″. Likely some variation in there but thats all I can offer.

Apache,
Was just curious if you have ever gotten a Cody Letter for it?
Sincerely,

1892takedown and Maverick;
Answer to 1892takedown first. Winchester shortened their barrels from the chamber end if I remember correctly. The forearm length is shorter than a standard length forearm. This also found on Factory Short Rifles. I haven’t taken the rifle out of the vault yet in order to measure the diameter.
Maverick; No I haven’t. Fact is I just haven’t thought much about it until now. Is it just that this 22″ barreled rifle is so damn heavy in a 40-60 caliber, or is the barrel thicker (heavier) than standard? If it is a standard configured barrel, then how much does a standard length 28″ rifle weigh, 150 pounds? Ha, Ha,

Thank You Folks;
I sort of figured that because the bore was smaller that there was more metal on the barrel, but I wasn’t sure. It does however make sense. Good thing that Winchester didn’t make the ’76 in 25-25. I’d need a crain to lift it.
Thanks again, Apache ( ya ta hey )

Have you had a chance to measure the diameter at the muzzle yet?
Mike
Mike;
Not yet. Too busy with Christmas preparations and making “Goodies” to eat for Family and Friends. From Arizona to all of you out there, have a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Chanuka, and even if it doesn’t look good on this December 20th, 2018, a most Happy and Prosperous New Year. May you take many Scalps and count many Coups in 2019.

Apache,
I have a short rifle 1876 in .40-60, but with the 24 inch (nominal as it measures 24 and 1/4″) round barrel. Its diameter at the muzzle is right at 0.810. This rifle is supported by a factory letter for its barrel configuration. Hope this helps. Short 1876 rifles are rather scarce, but in my opinion, more handy.

Apache and others,
As an add on, I also measured the diameter of a third model round barreled 1876 with 28 inch barrel, in .45-75. The barrel at the muzzle measured essentially an identical diameter as the 24 inch short barreled one in .40-60. May be more info than you wished to know, but serves as a comparison.
