This may sound strange. I am selling a 1961 Model 70 Featherweight. Metal is all original and like new, I will say 99% +. Stock is original, has one rub mark on side of butt and a couple of light storage marks. With an excellent set of Buehler rings and mount (not attached).
I am trying to make shipping easy on myself, and thinking of selling the stock and action separately. Would it be a losing proposition? I am looking to get $1K plus shipping. Can’t post pictures here.

Yes, people buy barreled actions. An original pre-64 M70 is a fine piece of work. You might realize a greater return on investment by separating the barreled action from its stock. You might realize a greater return by parting it out. Heck of a thing to do to a pre-64 in good condition.

I would not “part it out”. It would just be 2 parts. The barreled action complete, and the stock with butt plate, swivels, trigger guard, floor plate, and all magazine parts.
I have sold many gun parts, the buyers were very thank full, as they needed the parts for repair or projects, and the parts are difficult to find. I have bought many large and small gun parts myself, needed for repair or a project. Luckily I found someone selling them.

May I speak bluntly?
I don’t know why you are concerned about shipping. Typically, buyers pay shipping. A rifle is not hard to ship. Use USPS Ground Advantage. Get a commercial shipping kit from Cambridge Packaging, Lima, Ohio. Charge the buyer for it.
You aren’t going to sell the rifle for what you want without good photography. If you can’t post photos here, you can’t post them on Gunbroker.
If the rifle is in the condition you say, you should be able to get a thousand for it plus shipping but only if people can see and agree.
I follow the market on pre64 Featherweights pretty closely. The majority of them were made in 30/06 and that is not a detriment. The Featherweight sells better than the Standard these days, in the common calibers. People still like the ’06 and, unlike the barn burners, don’t worry about a washed out bore.in a used rifle.
I just bought a 1960 Featherweight 30/06 on Gunbroker. You can look it over anrd compare yours. Item # 1187977819. It hammered fot $981 after 24 bids. By the time the fees and taxes were added in, the tab was $1153.
Note that it has a newish Pachmayr Whiteline pad, so don’t let anybody low rate your gun if yours has one. An ’06 Featherweight with full house 180 grain hunting ammunition will.kill anything that walks in America if you can shoot straight. It will also give most hunters a raging flinch without a pad.
Parting it out and selling it piece by piece is a hell of a lot of work. As well as destroying a nice gun. I have never intentionally done it but a parts dealer was high bidder on a my 1951 standard grade 270 with Stith Streamline mount and Weaver K3. It barely made a thousand because it was a 75% gun. I owned and hunted with the gun for a Decade but lost money when you add in the scope and mount I bought separately. Lesson learned; Don’t sell a good scope with an average rifle. Doesn’t help.

I have no problem listing items with pictures on Gunbroker. I have 1500 feedback there as a seller. This forum does not let me post pictures.
Selling 2 parts just requires the action taken out of the stock. Saves the buyer of each the $18 addition USPS charges for over 30″ packages. I have unfortunately had a couple of rifles damaged in shipping. Shorter packages have less chance of damage. I don’t know what a 99%+ complete barreled action with Buehler mount and rings, unattached included, or an all original stock with a little wear would sell for individually. Or their demand.

Wolf, you should pony up our risibly small annual dues and become a WACA member. Failing that, you can email me the pix of your Featherweight or a link to where I can download them. Do that and I’ll post them here for you. In a minute I’ll PM you my email address.
When it became time for me to sell several pieces of my collection. I broke down and ordered a group of six of the Cameron custom rifle box kits that include 3 layers of cross-linked foam – the stuff they make marine docking fenders from. You cut out the gun’s outline from the middle layer with a hot knife. Wrap the gun in the provided anti-rust sheet, make a sandwich of the three foam layers and it’s a close fit into the heavy duty cardboard box. My last cost for a kit, including the stiff UPS charge divided by six to get them to me from Lima, Ohio, was about $48 USD. And USPS will assess an overlength fee. BUT, if you explain it in advance, put in the additional terms, and explain what they are getting for the money — I have never had shipping damage or had a buyer complain. I’ve seen the outer box breached but never the foam sandwich. It is extremely resistant to a penetrating strike.
Just a suggestion.
