Tin Type photos flip the image so your seeing the left side. Here is one of my tin types showing the loading gate. So the image is flipped or is this a rare left handed 73. Laugh

You’re right Bob, that’s a rare “73”! Laugh

I was Glad Maverick reminded me of the mirror image of the Tin Type as you’re saying. The cartridges in the belt are a little more evident, and a clearer picture, in you’re Tin Type.

Anthony, contact the Doc Pardee museum and see if they can reference the photo to see if it is him.

Thanks Bryan,

That’s good advice! Smile To be honest, I didn’t realize there was a Doc Pardee museum!

73-3rdModel-MillsBelt-Revolver.jpgImage Enlarger73-ElevatorVSBeltCart.jpgImage EnlargerI’m sorry it was annoying me, so I had to fix it. The original image is a mirror image, as the loading gate over is always on the right side of the receiver. When you compare the height of the bulged portion of the Mills Belt with that of the location of the receiver’s elevator. They match up nicely and Its my opinion that the cartridge in the belt is for the rifle in the picture. Also the revolver could be in the same caliber as well.

From the picture I can’t tell for certain if the 73 receiver is stepped receiver or not. So I’d say its up for debate if its a 44 or 38.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Billy_the_Kid_tintype_Fort_Sumner_1879-80-Edit2.jpgImage EnlargerFLIPPED-BillyTheKid.jpgImage EnlargerYeah for years, including while he was alive and still to this day journalists, reporters, authors, you name it, make the claim that “Billy The Kid” was left handed. But any sharp eyed Winchester Collector knows that loading gates are always on the right side of the receiver. I do wonder what Billy’s 1st Model SRC is worth today.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Maverick,

I agree as it was driving me crazy also. I’m glad that you fixed it, as it deserves to be straight! It always did remind me of that famous picture of the Kid. Yeah reporters have said for years he was wrong handed! LOL! Billy’s rifle is worth a fortune, if you’re willing to buy the story!

As a point of interest I have learned that the popular tin type produced four images, two of which were reversed. I have a very good quality print of the Library of Congress copy of that tin type that suggests Billy the Kid was not left-handed and his rifle definitely had the loading gate on the right side.

Anyone have any idea how many Billy the Kid 1873’s are out there? I’ve read of two shotguns that he used to kill Ollinger and make good his escape. All I can say is the dimes are worth at least $2 each as that, too, may be legend rather than fact. I love a good story but I have a hard time paying cold, hard cash for it…unless it’s in the DVD bargain bin.

Wish I could have been a fly on the wall at this event! Not the auction, the shooting competition in 1875.

Was this one of John Fox’s rifles?  He had a few Granville Stuart rifles.  After John passed away I believe his collection was bought my RIA?

I guess since we are on the subject, has there been a complete list of 1 of 1,000 serial numbers published for the 73’s. I may have 74 or so of them wrote down.

In Jim Gordon’s book “Winchester’s New Model of 1873 A Tribute” has a list of all of them.

George Madis’ Winchester Handbook also has the serials listed as well.

If I recall there is some variation between published sources. Which I suppose you could debate until the cows come home!

Wilson’s book has a couple examples of some nice fakes that he thought was original. So I’d take it with a grain of salt.

Ed Lewis’s book is just about the most complete on the subject in my opinion and even it is not without an a potential error or two.
