Anyone buy anything yesterday? Anyone in attendance? I watched intermittently yesterday through proxibid. Didn’t bid on anything.
I see it starts out again this morning at lot #1000. Winchesters will start the morning off with Zane Grey’s M1895 coming up quick.
One item I noticed that sold real high was the Winchester revolver.
Comments or reactions thus far?
I saw that rifle yesterday at the auction. It was displayed in a glass case, so could not pick it up, but from what I could see, it was “new”. Just a beautiful example, that was near perfect. Would have loved to pick it up and look at it closer, but since I was not in the market for a 73, just admired from a distance.
Based on what I saw, if you wanted the best condition 73 out there, this was it.
I am not a 73 collector, so cannot comment further on price realized. I believe they estimated $35K on the high side.

Sometimes things aren’t always what they seem to be! Especially when Rock Island Auction is involved. Anyone recall the thread about Winchester 1886 Serial number 1 from a few years ago?
Here’s a Cavalry Model that sold for, with commission, $402,500 yesterday. Read through the entire thread. It sold for about 98% more than it is probably worth, or translated, this is an $8,000 gun on a very good day.
I was logged in through proxibid. There was an 1886 that I had a strong eye on:
The chambering combined with the heavy, extra length barrel and a museum letter were strong attractions for me. With an auction estimate of $5500 to $8500, combined with talk of the Winchester market being soft, I thought what if it sells on the low end? So, there I was, ready. For those following it, it sold for exactly double the high end of the auction estimate: $17,000. And then of course, there’s the matter of the 21.5% commission, packing and shipping on top of that…
Sigh.

Good to know there’s no shortage of billionaires, or at least multi-millionaires, who like guns; just hope they’ll remember to set aside a small fraction of their wealth to help re-elect “our (only) friend” in the next Presidential election–probably the most important in our lifetimes.
Steve, Several years ago I chased a similar 86 exhvy in 32″ at RIA, it lettered 15 pounds like a Sharps. The estimate was $8,500 and I paid $26,000, maybe not smart but I own it. Bidders come out of the wood work when big extra heavy’s go on the block. Now I feel better about my purchase. T/R

Tom, I am out of town so did not get to see what your friend’s 73 SRC sold for?
