I can not see any obvious signs that it is a refinished rifle… and apparently, neither did the person who bought it, and the other people who placed bids on it.

I agree with you Bert. It looks like a very nice high condition original finish model 61 to me, too.

Count me in on the votes for original. I sure don’t see anything suspicious. I watch this seller all the time on GB since he has some of the best examples out there. I am a bit surprised the rifle went that high as I would have guessed it would go to 3500-4000. Just my two cents…….

I would concur that the rifle is all original. The OB .22 Short is quite hard to come by and makes up only 64 rifles out of a total of 3,621 total in my survey of the Model 61’s. That is only 1.7% of the Model 61’s that have been for sale in the past 33 years or so. Simply…. there just are not many around. So either you pay top dollar for one in a big on line auction or keep checking the front door porch for a gift from the tooth fairy!
Any chance anyone got the full serial number for the gun so that I can enter it into my survey. I have 3 other 32xxx rifles in .22 Short OB and want to make certain it is not a duplicate.

Michael,
How many round barrel .22 shorts do you have in your survey?
Thanks,

Good morning Al,
I have catalogued 50 RB .22 Short only rifles making them just a bit more uncommon than the OB counterpart. Though nowhere near as “cool” looking. That equates to 1.4% of the sampled rifles so far.

Wow, crazy money. Never ceases to amaze me how people cannot see a refinished Winchester.

My NOVICE expertise leads me to agree. The bluing in the proof marks, the finish/ luster of the metal, the difference in patina/ wear of the sights and dovetail blank… lead me to agree.
Being that I am 1) not qualified to appraise firearms 2) not participating in this purchase 3) probably purchased more “uncollectable” Winchesters then most on this forum, I hope the purchaser is ecstatic and that I am wrong.
Saying that, I don’t mind refinished examples. I have myself enjoyed bringing a few rusted and pitted Winchester rimfires out of junk piles and onto gun racks.
PS I don’t recall the seller stating that the finish is original.
