Just picked up a beautiful post-64 Model 70 Super Express Classic in 375H&H. Serial number dates to approximately 1996. I believe this is the model was replaced by the current production Safari Express. My question concerns the recoil pad. Orange color, with the Pachmayr name on it. My question is what model pachmayr pad is this, and would an orange old English D752B pad be an upgrade. The 375H&H recoil isn’t that bad, but the current pad is pretty hard.
Thoughts?
“If it ain’t a Colt or a Winchester, it’s probably a copy.”
Hi Mr. B! Sounds like a really nice rifle! Your apparent central question, effacy/worth of substitution, I don’t know! Following just my impressions/comments for whatever worth.
First, the model names of Winchester Model 70 rifles of the nineties era, seeming to me bit fluid and repetitive. I have a ’93 .338 CRF of that era and just bit later ’94(?) .416. “Classic Super Grade” & “Classic Super Express”, respectively. It goes on from there rearranging similar terms & bit confusing!
Perhaps someone here to answer your “what is it” exact Pachmyr model. As likely not. Some of the older Pachmyrs had model codes on underside. No idea in later eras as yours. Win Factory might be able to answer, but at best likely response with their own part number! Pachmyr factory – ?Either worth a try if really important.
Your rifle, a quality Winchester, but not “collectible”; seems to me you do as you please. Properly accomplished replacement, shouldn’t hurt value at all at least for some decades until “rare & desirable”! 🙂 Conversely, that “customization a double edged sword. Doubt likely to increase value balanced against investment w/installation.
The pure aside, I’d counsel against any “customized” stock length reduction if best value to be retained. (Also even possibility to reinstall the original pad later if desired.) There are also the “slip on” recoil pads. Definitely not aesthetic in my book, but for me occasionally godsends, as increasing length of pull & ‘make it a double’ recoil effect combo-results. Were it me, I’d try that direction first IF practical for you/live with & size available and not itself too many ‘clams’.
The bottom line, suggesting, to be absolutely sure permanent results worth the potential expense, particularly to insure professionally done. The 375 just generates a lot of recoil. Newtonian physics rule with muzzle brakes in that arena! Downside, notably more ‘bang for the buck’! 🙂
Otherwise, beyond some ‘rearranging deck chairs’, much seemingly left to personal ergonomics and “perceived recoil”. Old English pads have had a good reputation. How much “felt” recoil reduction reasonably possible ultimately subjective… These big purpose-built chamberings not ones to happily go out & burn up fifty rounds! Lumpy shooting jacket arena if must!
Just my wordy take!
Best & Keep Safe!
John
