Hello, first post guys, so be gentle! I’m looking at a 94 in 30-30 that, based on a serial number search, was made in 1979. Condition is very close to 100%. My question has to do with the material that the receiver is made from…would this one be of the “powdered metal/iron-coated” varlaiety, or forged as (I believe) the later ones were? Serial number is 4724492.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

It is my understanding that Winchester went back to the forged & milled receiver frames at the same time the Big Bore Model 94 was introduced in 1978.

Thank you sir; is there any way to tell for sure by looking at the rifle? The receiver bluing looks very nice…but maybe the mystery metal/iron ones do too for awhile:).

Rob,

Not that I know of, at least not on one of them that is still in excellent condition.  As they begin to exhibit wear to the bluing, it becomes painfully obvious.

Thanks Bert. I can get it for $425 and it literally looks new. May jump on it and hope for the best!

It’s referred to as ‘sintered’ metal….

If you can’t convince them, confuse them
