Your Ranger may have been built in 1988 but apparently one or more parts are a bit older.

I’d rather see old parts used on old guns but apparently someone used it to return your Ranger to shooting condition so it’s definitely a good thing as far as that goes.

Well it’s never been out of my possession, bought it new from JC Pennys.
Beats me! I’ve only had one 94AE (not a Ranger) and sold it years ago. The screw does appear to secure a pin.

The charts I read says 88 started with 5517897, 89 started at 5574822. mine is 5559406, so 88.
I believe that you read the chart incorrectly. S/N 5517897 is listed as the last number used in the year 1988, and 5574822 was the last S/N in the year 1989.

Are you sure? I hope your wrong, as I really want it to be an 88, lol, as that’s my son’s birth year, and he is getting the carbine soon, as I just got a replacement for it.Still baffled as to why it has that set screw.
I used the information that was provided to me by the U.S. Repeating Arms Co. (the entity that manufactured your Ranger).

The set screw and pin design, Pre-64 style, was phased in for all Model 94s (and the Ranger) at serials of “about” 5.5M. It is mentioned in the variations section of my latest edition, available free* as mentioned on the WACA homepage. If not found in this edition, it is waiting for my latest revision to be posted on the website — revisions are posted as developed, and are “usually” very minor, change-wise.

But you have to admit, you don’t see a skull engraved stock like that every day.
I’m still looking for the HD engraving on this Ranger.
