Regarding the lower tang assembly number on a deluxe model 1894.  Lower tang marked 4950 XXX RB.  What does the RB stand for?  On stock, tang inlet 3353 T94.  What does T94 stand for?

Thanks,

Al

Ive seen the 94 T or T94 stamped on the end of the buttstock under the buttplate on a number of deluxe guns, usually have an accompanying assembly number. On deluxe or semi-deluxe guns most of the tang markings Ive seen have an assembly number followed by “CF” on both carbines and rifles.  Those with an assembly number with “CF S” have all had shotgun butts (have seen one with shotgun butt that was only marked with assembly number and “CF”).  One carbine I know of is marked with an assembly number followed by “CF C” for carbine style butt one would assume. Ive only seen one marked with and assembly number followed by an “R” and it was a 94 TD with ELW barrel, unchecked PG with plain wood and crescent butt.  Speaking strictly from a very limited number of guns surveyed this is what Ive been able to come up with.

It’s a shotgun butt, with rubber butt plate. 1/2 octagon, 1/2 mag.  Serial number applied in 1897

Thanks.

RB is Rubber Butt. I have seen SB on guns with Swiss Butt.

Chris, The CF as I recall we had a discussion about that a year or two back and the consensus was “Custom Fit”. I first thought it was Case Frame but it was seen on Blued guns.

Hey Bob,

Totally agree on the “CF” — you see it used to mark tangs on a number of the models.  Hadn’t thought of the “R” being for rubber butt but makes sense.

The one example I mentioned with an “R” may have had the buttstock swapped or mismatched.  Its got “15800 R” stamped on the tang but under the crescent buttplate (in the wood) it has “94” over “15660”?? who knows.   In looking through some of my old stuff I found another marked with assembly number and “CF RB” on the tang that is a deluxe pg with SB and rubber buttplate, it also has the assembly number and T94 on the upper tang inlet of the buttstock.

I had some time today so I dug out a 94 I had in the safe with a rubber butt plate and pulled the stock. It has the the RB stamp as well too confirm the RB means Rubber Butt plate.
