Hello, I don’t know too much about the model 1873, but while at a local gun shop over the weekend, they had one with the following features:
38 wcf, Octagon barrel, full mag, SN 122291, 28″ barrel, and set Trigger. I know the 28″ barrel and set trigger are special order. How scarce are these with 28″ barrel?
Thanks,
Al

Al,
I am not cataloging Model 1873’s but my guess is that the 28 inch barrel configuration would make up less than a couple % of total production. Similar to the 1892 distribution. Gordon surveyed “more than 3800 rifles” for researching his classic reference books on the 1873 and found 169 sporting rifles with a 28 inch barrel. 19 were in 32 WCF, 32 were in 38 WCF, and 118 were chambered for 44 WCF. Assuming a total number of 3850 samples the 28 inch guns make up 4.3% of total production. It will be interesting to wee what numbers our resident expert “1873man” has based on his survey.

Al,
As Michael stated the Jim Gordon survey of 3800 guns is real close to what I’ve come up with from my survey which is just over 16,000 guns. I come up with 4.2% of all 73’s have a 28″ barrel and if I just look at 38 calibers its 4.8%. The barrel length is not rare with 24″ being standard 26″ and the 28″ are equal in numbers. When I go to gun shows I always find 26″ and 28″ guns.
