Hello there,
I’m sort of new here, but I just want to first say what a wonderful collection of knowledge this forum is and all presented with such a helpful attitude (unlike some firearm related forums I frequent). So thank you for that.
I have been collecting Winchesters for quite some time now and have about 12 various collectible (to me) models and several shooters (I guess some are both!) and am always looking for a deal (which isn’t always easy to find here in Los Angeles) and drooling over Rock Island’s Premiere Auction. I have an opportunity on a 1892 SRC with a shotgun buttstock and Redfield peep sight and have a couple of questions you may be able to help with.
The tool here dates the rifle at 1919. The seller says that the Redfield sight was added later at the factory and, at the same time, the existing rear sight was modified (not removed or replaced with a blank – I don’t think, I can’t tell from the current pictures, waiting for more detail) to remove the blade(s). The saddle ring was removed (the loop is still there) to clear the sight and the seller has the ring.
Is that a plausible story? I understand from briefly looking at Madis, that Winchester would supply many different 3rd party sights. Would they also add them at the factory as a service item? What else should I look for to try to determine the type and vintage of the sight?
The seller also claims the shotgun style (flat) stock is rare, compared to a curved buttplate. There is a steel buttplate, although I can’t see it in detail in the current pics. Is it plausible that that this is factory as well?
The carbine is chambered in 25-20.
Thanks in advance. I think my WACA membership is going to pay off just in the knowledge gained.
Cheers,

Hello Steve,
It is very unlikely that Winchester removed the saddle ring and installed the Redfield receiver mounted peep sight. Shotgun butt stocks were a special order item, but they are not “rare” on the Model 1892.

How much would a sight such as a Redfield (was the predecessor Western?) added to a firearm such as an 1892 or 1886 affect value? With regards to this matter, I am somewhat clueless.
I do not have the rifle readily accessible, but I have a Winchester 1886 Rifle, .45-70 with pistol grip, checkered, and take down in 95% ++ condition, except for the fact that someone added in the ‘teens’ or ’20’s a Western Receiver sight. Professionally done, looks nice on it, except for the fact it is NOT factory original, and the rifle would look a whole lot better if someone did NOT add this.
So, how does this affect value, e.g., to what degree? I would imagine a minty, deluxe 1886 rifle such as this one would be much more affected than a well-used 1894, for example.

In answer to your question above, the general consensus is that it is a minimum 50% value reduction regardless of which model you have. Now, a 50% value loss on a minty Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle is many thousands of $$$$, whereas on a plain Jane well used Model 1894, a 50% value reduction is only a few hundred $$$, and the sight can be removed and sold separately to recoup $100 – $150 of that loss.

I did state I was rather clueless, which I was, but I would have ‘guessed’ a 50 % reduction in value now that you state it that way. I was thinking along the lines of diminished value in dollars but if you have a deluxe 1886 that otherwise would be worth $10,000 and is instead worth $5,000 or a $750 grey 1894 worth $375 because of the sight, the end result is the same as far as fractional value.
Supergimp,
Do you have a link to the rifle you are looking at? I will be glad to take a much closer look at it for you. I agree with Bert that it is highly doubtful that Winchester altered the ring. Do you have any other 1892’s you would like to add to my survey of this line?
