My Model 64 “Deer Rifle” ser. #1151152, chambered for 30 W.C.F. is equipped with the bolt peep and a slot blank in the barrel. The only other bolt peep sights I have come across were on the .219 Zipper. I checked a period catalog and found the bolt peep could be ordered on almost any of Winchester’s lever actions. Has anyone else come across a gun with the bolt peep and not in the .219 Zipper caliber? My camera currently will not focus for close up pictures, so no pictures available at this time, sorry. RDB

Roger,
Not to be a smart-a$$, but Yes, I have come across hundreds of Winchester lever-actions rifles with a bolt-peep in other calibers… specifically, the Model 71 in 348 WCF, and the Model 65 in 218 Bee. Now, it your question was how many Model 64 rifles have I encountered with a bolt-peep not in 219 Z, the answer is less than a handful.

Thank you Bert. It appears that I failed to make my question clear. It was Model 64s not chambered for the .219 Zipper cartridge, Model 94s with bolt peep sights and even model 92s (of which, I know of two that weren’t .218 Bee caliber). Forgive my lack of communication skills. The first two pictures are from an Amsokeag Auction the third is a picture of my 92 carbine (middle gun) with the bolt peep.

Roger,
I was mostly just pulling on your tail (so-to-speak). I do not believe that I have seen a Model 94 with a bolt-peep sight (yet). Same for the Model 92.

I have one in each configuration. 64 dlx bolt peep and standard 64 without and receiver not drilled for receiver sight
Thanks antler1, maybe somebody can advise or confirm the deluxe had a bolt peep and the standard didn’t. 🤷🏻
Rick,
Go find your copy of the Winter 2022 WACA Collector magazine and read it again… pg. 22 to be specific.
The No. 98A bolt peep was standard on all 219 Zipper rifles unless ordered without it… regardless of it being a Standard or a Deer Rifle variant.

That confirms it. Thanks Bert. Will read it now but I guess one that is rear sight only will not be able to be confirmed ordered without. Do you know if when ordered without, were the holes still drilled in the bolt ?
Rick C
Currently I have (297) 219 Zipper Model 64 rifles documented in my survey. Of that number, (198) are confirmed to have the No. 98A bolt peep sight. In addition to the No. 98A peep sight, there were at least a few dozen equipped with a Lyman No. 56 receiver sight.

Rick,
On a 219 Zipper rifle that was factory ordered for the 22-H open rear sight, Winchester omitted the milled grooves and drilled & tapped holes require to mount a No. 98A bolt peep sight. If you find a 219 Zipper rifle that was milled & tapped for the bolt peep sight but has any other type of rear sight on it, somebody took the bolt peep sight off of it and replaced it with a different rear sight. More often than not, the bolt peep sight was removed to mount a scope (which was later removed).
