I need receiver plug screws. A guy on ebay has them, 8-40. Is that the correct size?
No, 6-48 is the correct (factory) size unless somebody has drilled the receiver out for the larger size.
Plug screws should have a very slight dome shaped head.
Brownell’s will have them. Pachmayr sells a kit of common gunsmithing screws, although that is overkill.

OfflineI forgot to mention three things about receiver sights:
1. Ben Tolson is a member.
2. eBay is a common source of sights.
3. Early versions of the Lyman 48WJS require you cut a piece from the stock. Don’t buy one of those. You want the later one that doesn’t.

OfflineHi wollfbait-
Like Zeb said, pre-64 M70 plug screws are 6-48. If it matters, the ones the factory used are slightly domed on top and don’t have a “stop”. See if this pic works…

Brownells sells 6-48 plug screws by the dozen. They’re either flat on top or have the “stop”, but does that matter? The ones with the stop look very much like the factory plugs when installed IMHO…

May I suggest you quit messing with eBay and become familiar with Brownells? You will eventually need them and you can call them on the phone and discuss exactly what you want. They are the premier supplier to the gunsmithing trade. Use eBay when you are more familiar with what you need.
Tell them you need 6-48 plug screws with a stop, like those Winchester employed on its Model 70.
Take a look at these:

I guess I am getting confused by the terminology. The ones I showed on ebay stated “Winchester Model 70/54, Remington 700 6-48 Plug Screws with STOP”
One person stated “They’re either flat on top or have the “stop”, but does that matter? The ones with the stop look very much like the factory plugs when installed IMHO…”

OfflineHi wolfbait-
IF the goal is simply to put plugs in the factory scope base holes, then it does not matter which type you choose. ANY 6-48 plug screw will work.
IF the goal is to replace the plug screws with ones that look like the ones the factory installed, then you’d need ones like I pictured above. I took those out of a M70 receiver to take pictures.
Most of the aftermarket plug screws for sale these days are either flat on top (such that they can sit flush with the receiver surface) OR are they made with the “STOP” or “cap” (such that they protrude slightly, but cannot be turned in too far). Of the two commonly available styles, the ones with the stop look more like the factory plug screws when installed than the ones that are flat on top and sit flush. The ones you posted a link to are the ones with the stop. They will work fine and look like factory plugs (unless someone removes them for “examination”)….

OfflineThanks for the explanation. I ordered them, I think they will work for me. The nice thing about buying from ebay, is I just push a buy button, they take money from my paypal, and I get the item in a couple of days. Simple. The seller mailed them the same day I bought them. If the item lost in the mail, wrong item sent, or defective, I get my money returned from ebay including postage. A very simple guaranteed way to buy something.
