I need receiver plug screws. A guy on ebay has them, 8-40. Is that the correct size?

No, 6-48 is the correct  (factory) size unless somebody has drilled the receiver out for the larger size.

Plug screws should have a very slight dome shaped head.

Brownell’s will have them.  Pachmayr sells a kit of common gunsmithing screws, although that is overkill.

I forgot to mention three things about receiver sights:

1. Ben Tolson is a member.

2.  eBay is a common source of sights.

3.  Early versions of the Lyman 48WJS require you cut a piece from the stock. Don’t buy one of those. You want the later one that doesn’t.

Hi wollfbait-

Like Zeb said, pre-64 M70 plug screws are 6-48.  If it matters, the ones the factory used are slightly domed on top and don’t have a “stop”.  See if this pic works…

Pre-64-M70-Plug-Screws-copy.jpg

Brownells sells 6-48 plug screws by the dozen.  They’re either flat on top or have the “stop”, but does that matter?  The ones with the stop look very much like the factory plugs when installed IMHO…

Best,

Lou

Nope, they have a shoulered top, or “cap”.  The Winchester plug screws were the same size at the top and bottom.  You can actually screw them past being flush with the receiver side.  RDB

Thanks, I appreciate your time responding. These look like the ones.

May I suggest you quit messing with eBay and become familiar with Brownells?  You will eventually need them and you can call them on the phone and discuss exactly what you want. They are the premier supplier to the gunsmithing trade.  Use eBay when you are more familiar with what you need.

http://www.brownells.com

Tell them you need 6-48 plug screws with a stop, like those Winchester employed on its Model 70.

Take a look at these:

I guess I am getting confused by the terminology. The ones I showed on ebay stated  “Winchester Model 70/54, Remington 700 6-48 Plug Screws with STOP”

One person stated “They’re either flat on top or have the “stop”, but does that matter?  The ones with the stop look very much like the factory plugs when installed IMHO…”

homestead parts has the correct ‘plug’ screws .the screw has very slight head that allows screw head to sit just proud of reciever. from going to deep .also have all the screws sets/individual for all lever models.

.Plug screw SET Winchester 1894 PRE and POST 64 receiver mounted sight or scopes (read description correct screw combination)

If your rifle previously had a receiver mounted sight or scope it most likely used these holes. The screws that were used to hold the mount onto the receiver can not be used to fill the holes when the mount is removed. The furthest forward hole is finger lever pin stop screw. The finger lever pin stop screw is different between the pre and post 64. If your rifle was made before 1964 you want (wp71d). Post 64 production is part number (C100A). This screw holds the pin in place that connects your finger lever to the bolt. The 2 back holes are filled with plug screws (same for pre and post 64). You have a choice between just a straight plug screw (wp46), or a positive stop plug screw (there is a tiny lip on the Forearm so the screw stops flush with recviever) (wp540a) if you would like the stainless plug screws please order separatly part number wp540b) USE THE DROP DOWN LIST BELOW TO CHOOSE SCREW YOUR SCREW COMBINATION.

Hi wolfbait-

IF the goal is simply to put plugs in the factory scope base holes, then it does not matter which type you choose.  ANY 6-48 plug screw will work.

IF the goal is to replace the plug screws with ones that look like the ones the factory installed, then you’d need ones like I pictured above.  I took those out of a M70 receiver to take pictures.

Most of the aftermarket plug screws for sale these days are either flat on top (such that they can sit flush with the receiver surface) OR are they made with the “STOP” or “cap” (such that they protrude slightly, but cannot be turned in too far). Of the two commonly available styles, the ones with the stop look more like the factory plug screws when installed than the ones that are flat on top and sit flush.  The ones you posted a link to are the ones with the stop.  They will work fine and look like factory plugs (unless someone removes them for “examination”)….

Thanks for the explanation. I ordered them, I think they will work for me. The nice thing about buying from ebay, is I just push a buy button, they take money from my paypal, and I get the item in a couple of days. Simple. The seller mailed them the same day I bought them. If the item lost in the mail, wrong item sent, or defective, I get my money returned from ebay including postage. A very simple guaranteed way to buy something.
