I picked up a M88 in a trade. It is a 1965 .284 win. The rifle is in near perfect condition with the exception the sights have been removed…..and it has a beautiful Bishop stock with a left hand cheek piece. The guy I got it from got it from his dad. According to the story, his dad bought it from the original owner who claims he sent the rifle back to Winchester after he bought it and had the factory install the Bishop stock. Was this common, or documented in any way? Could it ever be verified?
I’ll try to post up some pictures this weekend.

I have never heard of Winchester installing another manufacturers stock on one of their rifles, and find it highly unlikely. There is no way to verify, since there are no known records of such dealings. I find it far more likely that the rifle was sent to Bishop for the stock installation.

in my personal experience the pre-64 on the 88s isnt that big of a deal, to the naked eye very few parts changed with the retooling of the manufacturing process. but that piece seems very sexy. .284 is about the most desirable caliber when it comes to price. If it were mine and it were for sale 2k would be my price not a penny less. If you wanna sell it 1500-1750 would be list and see how they react. The caliber to me adds alot the stock also. but to some the stock will detract but its very appealing to the eye.

I can safely say that’s the prettiest 88 I’ve seen but I’m a sucker for a nice piece of wood.
