Recently got a barreled action model 1892 rifle. Bore isn’t great and has been cut(now a 22 inch octagon). I considered making up a shooter in .44 WCF out of it. I know the cartridge guides would be different and extractor. Any of you guys know what parts I have to source? Or maybe not worth the bother.

I can give you a few for sure and there might be more……..Complete magazine tube assembly and forearm wood for the larger diameter tube. I believe the bolt is different due to the difference in case head diameter. Your receiver will need to be modified to accept the larger magazine tube and cartridges. You already mentioned the cartridge guides. I’m not sure if they used the same lifter or not. That should give you a good start, if I missed anything hopefully someone else will jump in and fill in the blanks. Good luck and happy hunting with your project.

To add to Erins post: Carrier, tenon, mag tube ring, Breech Bolt assembly, extractor, ejector, and forend tip. Im sure there is more so, to answer your question, it would not be worth the expense. If the rest of the gun is nice, just find a replacement 32 cal barrel.

The lifter is different.  The 25-20 and 32 WCF lifter have a concave surface while the 38 and 44 WCF are flat surfaced.

If trying to convert a small caliber 92 to large caliber you will have to do the following:

  • Carrier/elevators are different
  • Bolts are different along with different size/shape ejectors
  • Levers are different
  • You would have to enlarge the opening for the magazine tube in the receiver
  • The inside of the large caliber receiver is milled for the carrier spring whereas the small caliber incorporates this into the cartridge guides.
  • Magazine tube and retaining bands are different diameters. Magazine spring and follower different sizes
  • On rifles the forend cap is different size diameter for magazine tube opening
  • For rifles the forearm tenon is different
  • On rifles and carbines the forearm wood is different

Youd be better off starting with a large caliber receiver to build a large caliber 92

I have a very similar 1892 with a 23″ barrel. Minimal collector value but a pretty sweet action so I had it relined. It wasn’t a cheap repair but I suspect it would be less $ and trouble than the 44WCF conversion. I know you want a 44WCF but the 32WCF is a joy to shoot. Looks a little silly with tang and globe sights but I wanted a shooter and certainly have one.

Basically, the only caliber changes that are practical in the Model 1892 are between 25-20 and 32-20 and between 38-40 and 44-40.  Aside from necessary changes to the magazine tube recess in the frame, there are just too many parts that need to be exchanged making the cost prohibitive vs. the value of the outcome.  If the receiver is complete (with all the internal parts, why not install a new 25-20 or 32-20 barrel.  You can get a good, newly made, replica barrel for around $400.

Thanks for all the replies. I’m thinking it will stay a .32/20 for sure. Never fired one but probably a pleasant round for plinking.
