I’m not so sure about the “stupid” part, Bert. Some of these guys evidently know exactly what they’re doing and are quite good at it. Playing dumb may be a good ruse when they get caught.
Maybe we need a permanent P.T. Barnum Award thread open to nomination and comment posts. I wouldn’t want it to get too negative but some offerings, like this one, shouldn’t go without comment.

Ordnance Dept. markings on a weapon allegedly issued to the Forest Service, etc.? That’s interesting! All those faked inspection markings provide a hint of the con-artistry military collectors routinely deal with. Having a die cut used to be an expensive procedure, but computer controlled lasers have brought the cost down to a level even amateur counterfeiters can easily afford.
I like the fact that the U.S. government decided to go all out and get the burled walnut stocks on this UTILITRARIAN Model. And of course American Walnut just wouldn’t do, they had to have the coveted English Walnut. Oh and don’t worry the butt-plate is government approved. It even says so for itself. Here I’ll show you, its right here underneath it.
I can only imagine the all-knowing Tone in his voice when he tells the provenance in person.

The sad part about this is that someone will end up swallowing this swill and cough the dough to buy it. Then he’ll tell his family and friends about the “provenance” of this piece and another urban legend will be born, only to have to be disputed and disproved years later.
"This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
