I have been looking for a while for an 1886 to acquire. Have hit up a gun show or two but the few 86s have been in the stratosphere.
Have been looking at this one for a while. I like a lot about it. Eish the receiver had a hair more blue, but the price obviously wouldn’t be as attractive at thay point.
I have been looking at Merz as well, but I know between colts and parkers that he can be a bit high end of value.
Thanks
Here is one I keep coming back to of Leroys.
It’s a lot of change and a round barrel when I prefer an octagon.

KC,
The Merz rifle is way overpriced in my opinion. It started out as an octagon but then 4 years after it was shipped it came back to be reconfigured to a round barrel, shotgun butt, and caliber change. NOW the rifle has been changed again by somebody to a standard rifle butt stock. You definitely do not want this rifle. Merz, and a lot of other dealers buy rifles from the big auction houses and then mark them up for resale. You should do some looking at those same auctions and buy from then. Why pay at least 40% more for the same rifle?

I thought this was a decent 1886 that sold at Rock Island last weekend. A bit more money than some of what you’re looking at, but I think far and away, worth it. Like has been suggested here, it is a full octagon barrel, cresent butt version. Other strong attributes is the chambering – .45/90 – one of the most desirable. Also, it is deluxe pistol-grip checkered wood, it letters and the condition is nice. Not perfect, some blemishes but mainly just mellow wear.

I know this rifle well, it belonged to my late friend. Honest original gun that sold in the estimate range, but much cheaper than I thought. Just one of the bargains of that auction! T/R
