Bummer, I really like that rifle. I have better luck spotting a liner from the breech but the .374 bore would have made me look it over very carefully. Not a total loss; you will have a good shooter you can take anywhere, you found a good gunsmith and we all learned something. I’d wager this has happened to most of us, some of us may even have a surprise or two in our collection. Hard to say if these were legitimate repairs or fakery, I’m inclined to think they were honest repairs. It’s not hard to imagine a 129 year old gun having a few rough years and needing a little help along the way.

Mike, I agree that a little help is OK if needed and a liner doesn’t bother me that much as long the externals are all left alone. I’m starti g to wonder if the liner was not installed correctly and if that isn’t directly related to the cycling of the round. I’m sure my guy will figure all of that out.
I am having a lot of fun handloading for this round and fear an addiction may be settling in. I’m beginning to think about the 32-40 now. Oh boy. But you can bet my eyes will be a little more tuned in to what I’m looking at.

Scott-
I load and cast for both the 38-55 and the 32-40, both are very rewarding. I resisted getting a rifle chambered in 32-40 for years but it was inevitable. Thanks for inspiring me to spend a little time in my loading room!
