The Model 55 could have been equipped with a Lyman No. 21 or No. 38 receiver mounted peep sight on special order, or with a Lyman No. 1A tang sight. It is extremely unlikely that the Redfield sight is original. Can you post pictures of it?

Your rifle was manufactured during 1961. Yes the composite butt plate is correct for this time period. I have SN 322380.

Michael, approximately when did the composite buttplate commence? I have 280654 with a composite (already gave you the number for your survey previously).

The switch from the checkered steel to the composite butt plate happened during 1958 approximately at SN 260,000. I need to update the following link which has some of the results from the survey and contains the data documenting the change over.
