Just purchased a new 1873 in 45 Colt.
Having problems with the lifter. Cartridge entering from tube pushes against the one in the brass lifter causing it to cant to the side and back against the lower extractor. Can’t push the lever completely forward as the case is in crooked, rear canted toward loading gate, and pressing against the bolt.
I can operate the lever very briskly and it will force the case to straighten up and chamber but it is putting undue pressure on the lower lug of the bolt face.
I have loaded every possible COL and it doesn’t matter. I’m using a Lee mold cast bullet. Flat nose at 255 gn. I can send the rifle back to Winchester but if it is a known problem and an easy fix I would rather not.
Absolutely beautiful curly maple stock and color case hardened steel. Love the gun but would really like for it to work properly.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ed
I can’t really give you any help, I’ve never looked at any of the 73 repo’s. The Winchesters don’t have a lower extractor, they have a lip that keeps the shell up into the top extractor. The only thing I can guess is the elevator is milled with a wider slot than a Winchester that lets the shell cock or you have a timing issue as to elevator is not lined up with the bolt. I have never seen this in a Winchester.

How about sending it back to Miroku?
Definitely + 1! If it’s under warranty, I’d not consider fooling with a feeding issue beyond simple inspection for irregularity. Such, for instance, errant packing material mechanism-ingestion, etc. First suggestion, contact dealer to make the problem a joint one with him/her in the loop particularly in consideration of returning the rifle anywhere for repair. From there, to contact whomever typically directed in the new-gun-accompanying warranty literature.
My definite take
Good Luck
