I have a model 53 I got from a deceased friend’s collection. Someone was looking at it and remarked that the rifle finish was not original.
The rifle is a takedown model, in 32-20, pistol grip, color case-hardened receiver and lever, and checkered wrist and fore end. It also has a very low serial number (3 digits). . I believed the firearm to be a Deluxe model
My question is did Winchester make a model with these characteristics?
Thanks in advance.
The person who looked at it is correct… the finish is not factory original. The vast majority of the Model 53 Rifles were manufactured with a straight grip butt stock. A pistol grip stock was available as a special order item. If you can provide clear pictures of the stock & checkering, I can identify if it is factory original, or an aftermarket alteration. Does it have a serrated steel butt plate, or something else? Does the pistol grip have a black hard rubber grip cap with the Winchester logo on it?

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your expertise. I had a chance to look the rifle over closely yesterday and had to conclude I don’t think it is a Deluxe model.
It is a take down model in 32-20, early manufacturing date, color case, checkered forearm and at grip area and serrated butt plate. I found that the checkering was not as good as what I think a factory job would be. The loading gate was not case colored.
As i mentioned, this firearm is from a deceased friends collection and I am trying to find out what exactly it is. The notes that I got with the gun stated it was a Deluxe model along with some other descriptors. The questions I have are any of non standard items, color case and checkering. I have pictures that I took the other day that I would be glad to share with you. If you are interested, please PM me and I will send them. Your help would be appreciated.
My PM address is on the original post.

Hello,
As Bert eluded to the rifle certainly does not sound like it is factory original. The Model 53 was never offered with a case hardened receiver. Photographs would be a HUGE help to figure out what it is you have. You can send them to me at [email protected] and I will post them here.
