I am researching for information on my Grandfathers winchester 1894. It is a trapper/carbine length, saddle ring, 30 wcf, flip up rear sight that has a six digit searial number of 847222. On the right side of barrel next to the reciever edge is the markings of ( H.O.P. BP 708 ) this has been done with free hand stampings. My Grandfather told me that when he aquired this rifle some 50 or so years ago the previous owner said that it was a either a military or a federal issued rifle. He had thought early army or early federal prison. I have read a little on the Spruce rifles but I do not see any US or flamming bomb markings. Can anyone help? The rifle is in good to very good condition and funtions flawlessly. Thank you very much
Its not military or government issue since they would of used professionally made stamps not individual letter stamps.

Just a swag but with the little info you gave, it’s possible that a state prison did the stamping P-Prison BP-Bureau of Prisons are possibles. I’ve owned m94s with such receiver stamps, especially banks and guard services…try chasing that memory down for geographical names that might = H.O.P.
