Why are 1/2 Octagon barrels obviously lighter? I do not doubt you at all! My own 22″ 1/2 Octagon serial 427,xxx measures .670 at the muzzle. I Don’t understand the obvious part?
Also, does the .670″ muzzle diameter of my 22″ short rifle have any bearing on being original factory made or cutdown?

The comment was simply assuming an octagon barrel is turned down enough to eliminate the flats for that portion of the barrel so it would be a slightly smaller diameter. Now that you bring it up, I guess I’m not certain how they were made. All I know is the 1/2 octagon (standard) barrels have muzzle diameters that fall somewhere between the standards and the extra lights.
For the shorties I have measured, the standards seem to run in the .720 range, the 1/2 OBs in the .680 range, and the ELWs in the .575 range (including 1/2 OB ELWs).
Your 22″ 1/2 OB muzzle diameter of .670 certainly sounds in the right range to me.
