A “cap” would indicate a rifle fore end, AlasKen. Starting to sound like what is often known as a Frankenchester.

Bert,
a gentleman at work gave me a 94 chambered in 38-55 to clean for him. I pulled it out of the case and was surprised by the Serial Number 22XXX. If I’m correct reading your chart 1897 production date? It has been carried a lot in a saddle but is I’m magnificent mechanical shape. On the barrel just behind the rear sight says “FROM W F SHEARD TACOMA WASH”. Any info that I can relay to my friend would be greatly appreciated. I am going to get some details from him tomorrow about the history of this rifle.
best regards,
Cody Marr

Yes, serial number 22000 was manufactured in the year 1897. The complete serial number will allow me to pin it down to the precise month.
The W.F. Sheard marking tells us that the gun was originally shipped to his gun shop.
Can you provide me with pictures of the gun?
