Am I missing something here?  Or just an all-out bidding war?  I realize the high condition, but seems like crazy money for a plain-Jane 94…with still 7+ days left to go on the auction.

Once again an, “all out bidding war” with one of the bidders only having one piece of feedback.  It suggests a shill bidder is running it up.  I can’t say that with certainly but we know this is now widespread on internet auctions.

Agree.  Have you ever looked at the “Invaluable” online auction site. https://www.invaluable.com/ I am new in my hunt for old guns but got lucky on this site.  Even with the high house fees, I think it is easier to find a better deal.  There may be others.

Yea, I was following that one. The seller won’t honor my 03FFL in CA so I took it off of my watch list. Guess I’m not missing anything.

He also has a scoped M57. I was interested in that one even more, but not worth dealing with difficult sellers.

Looking at the bid history, that bidder with the “1” feedback rating won the below horrible looking Model 94.  A shill bidder than won by accident or a very novice collector…

Don,

Invaluable and Proxybid represent many of the auctions online discussed here on the forum: James Julia, Rock Island, etc. For those of us that don’t travel much, it’s fun to follow along but you’re right, the premiums can sometimes turn a good deal upside down. Occasionally I get lucky too.

Invaluable has a great mobile app as well that makes bidding from my office, where anything remotely resembling a gun is blocked online (including this forum – thanks Comcast/NBCU – for keeping us safe), relatively easy.

I don’t think it’s factory. The scope wasn’t made until 1935 or latter.

I have a minty 1942 Carbine as well, but it is a 32 Win, Special. I bought it online in 2012 for $850 shipped. If the guys who are bidding this one up will email me, I will sell you mine for much less.   Big Larry

That gun doesn’t look original to me at all. Maybe bad lighting and/or pictures, but look at the color of bluing all over. With no better pictures that that, I wouldn’t touch that gun. Peter

I agree that it more than likely is not factory original finish.  The telltale sign is the proof mark stamps on the frame ring and barrel.  As we all know, Winchester struck them after the receiver and barrel had been blued.  I see absolutely No discoloration in the bluing surrounding the proof mark stamps, which strongly indicates that the gun was been reblued.

I have the same impression as Bert and Peter on the finish.  So… over $3500 for a reblued circa ’42 M94 .30-30 carbine… speechless here.

This seller always gets more than the gun is worth. A few weeks back he got 3400.00 for a field grade model 42. His guns are of high quality though.

Gerald – is it your impression that the blue is original on this ’94?

Another case of a seller that has a lot of nice original guns for sale, but my first impression was that the blue is too nice considering the wood and the very dull blue on the buttplate that probably should look similar to the picture shown below.  Having said that, plus what has already been mentioned…well…

I agree with Bert on the proof mark, however looking closely at the lettering, it looks swelled up to me from the die. If it were reblued that swelling would be removed in the polishing process. Bottom line, better pictures or gun in hand.

Gerald,

Buff and polish it, then whack the new proof mark on it, then blue it, and you will get exactly what I am seeing in the pictures of that gun.

I was looking at this model 94 also and figured something is going on with the bidding because of the ridiculous high price it’s bid up to now. Way too high for a standard carbine in my opinion. Plus, he calls it an Eastern carbine.

Interestingly it is the same bidder in both cases.

The same seller has this model 57 as well (I know its a rim fire, so wrong forum). Curios as to claim that both scope and peep sight are both “factory”. Assume special order but why both?
