I recently bought a model 94 30-30 with a barrel that measures 17.5″ or 16.75″ of visible barrel. The serial number dates it 1972-73, is it rare with this length of barrel or did they even come from the factory like this ?

I do not believe that the barrel on your Model 94 is factory original. More then likely, somebody shortened it.

Yes… Winchester never made barrels in that length.

The only factory Winchester that I have found with a 17.5″ barrel is the very late (6.5M) BigBore Timber Carbine in 444 Marlin. It is marked 17 1/2″ on the box and to my knowledge is the only one so marked. That said, it indicates your gun has been shortened.
