I believe they were special order, but not 100% sure. Michael is the guy to ask.
Here is my Special order 1892 carbine with no sling ring.

Al I like that one! Is that Lyman 21 original to the gun? Is it coded DA or DB?
Thanks. Yes the Lyman 21 is original to the gun and is mentioned in the factory letter. I don’t know what code it is because I’ve never taken the sight off. As you can see, it also letters with no rear seat.

Oh my! That is sweet. Very sweet. I love the Lyman No. 21 sight – particularly on a carbine.
Thanks Steve. It’s one of my favorites.
Al,
I like that 92 also!
Pure speculation, but as stated in the Letter above, in tionesta’s post,”No Sling Ring”, would indicate to me that it’s a possible special oredered rifle without the sling ring, and then making it what us collectors call an Eastern Carbine.
Not to derail this post,
I see that Denny Stima ordered the Letter. We used to set up, back to back at the OGCA Show when we could. I tried to call him a little time back, and didn’t get an answer. I know that he retired and moved to Tennessee. I picked up a few nice pieces from him over the years, as he always had nice stuff, as is obvious from the picture. Anyone know if he’s still around, and active! Thanks.

Hello all,
Sorry to not answer in on this but have been busy at my ranch creating fire breaks for prescribed burns which will happen in Jan and did some hog and deer freezer filling. Packing up right now and will get into some data when I get back in Houston this afternoon.

Based on my survey data with approximately 19,100 rifle sampled there are 134 non sling ring carbines in the data. There are a total of 5,704 SRC’s. Therefore the non sling ring variation makes up approximately 2.3% of the carbine production. Based on some earlier calculations approximately 30% of the 1892 production were carbines. Roughly 295,500 carbines were produced of which 6800 were without the sling ring. Certainly uncommon but not quite in the rare category. These are “soft numbers” that are in the ball park for sure but PLEASE do not quote them as absolutes.

Hello Al,
Have you seen the factory engraved example coming up for auction at RIA? Just as gorgeous and with the same Lyman sight.
A couple things of interest about your rifle. The receiver was serialized on Valentines day 1905 but the rifle did not enter the warehouse until November. Hence it is proof stamped prior to the more common SN 300000 start for the 1892’s. Additionally, the barrel address stamp used is the “1D” style which is commonly last seen 3 years earlier in 1902! I only have a few examples in 1904 and then yours in 1905. When Winchester began the use of the Type 2 upper tang stamp, which did not have the patent date on it, a rifle with your barrel address was then stamped with a unique “patent date only” stamp on the barrel. The rest of the time coincident rifles have the Type 3barrel address which includes the patent date. It took me a while when collecting data to make that correlation.

Antonio,
I did get this at an OGCA show a few years back from a fellow WACA member, but not from Mr. Stima.
