I was at a gun show this weekend and see a prewar model 70 in really great shape. It appeared to be original, not drilled for a scope but it had a compass on the top of the stock. I am not am not that familiar with the model 70’s and was wondering if a compass was something you could order on a super grade 70.

Hi Jerry;
I started collecting Model 70’s in the 60’s. I have been selling most of them off to go in a different direction. During the time that I was looking for collectors, I did not see or hear of a factory installed compass on the stock. I encountered some with the compass but it was obvious that they were gunsmith installed although some were nicely done. The only sure way to tell would be to have the original order information.
If you can locate a person that has knowledge of Model 70’s, I would consuit him/her before buying.
