I just acquired Winchester Model 70 Super Grade 30 Gov’t ’06, serial number 15471. On the underside of the barrel just forward of the ebony stock tip is stamped “A S FISHER” Please see attached photos. Any idea what this is? Perhaps the rifle was special order and this is the name of the original purchaser?
The rifle has Griffin and Howe side mount with Lyman Alaska 2 1/2X scope. Per “The Rifleman’s Rifle,” Rule, page 248, I understand this could be ordered from Winchester. Is it reasonable to assume this scope set-up is factory original for this rifle?
Thanks for your thoughts.

That is a beautiful rifle. My thoughts are that the stamping was most likely done by whomever installed the sidemount, possibly G&H. I have never seen a Model 70 stamped with owner’s name in such a manner as yours. The Model 70’s that I have seen with owner’s names done by Winchester were typically silver or brass plaques inletted into butt of stock. These were usually presentation rifles. I am not all that familiar with G&H work, but I believe you can still contact them and they will look serial number up in their records and verify whether they have done the custom work. Unfortunately nothing of the sorts available in the way of Winchester records for the 70.
