My understanding is that those slots were used to secure the metal block (work piece) to a fixture during milling operations. They serve no purpose in the finished part. I guess Winchester came up with different fixtures by the time they were making parts for M70s because they usually turn up only on some (very far from all) pre-war M70s. It would not surprise me at all to see one on a 1946 gun, however…
Are these the slots you’re talking about? Pics are of Standard and Magnum followers each with/without the mill cuts.
