On Jan. 19 I went to a local LGS mostly for entertainment than anything. They tend to get a lot of vintage and antique guns. I saw a rifle I wasn’t familiar with and asked to see it. I was handed a Winchester Model 64. As soon as I shouldered it, had that OMG!I gotta git me one a deese! moments. The sights come instantly to my eye. The rifle comes up quick and hangs on target beautifully. The rifle appeared to have been handled little and shot even less. It seems to be as it came from the factory without mods. or repairs. The bore is crisp and shiny. The action and breach show no signs of wear. I bought it. Of course, I had to wait the obligatory 10 day Kalifornia harassment period. Went home and started to research. Right away I found Ken’s very well done YouTube video, which came out the same day I purchased this little gem. Which, also, led me to this sight. This rifle is a standard version in 30WCF. se# 1494613.
I would like some advice. I would like to find a period correct receiver sight. I’m thinkin’ Lyman 56. From what I’ve read, adding a sight and plugging the dovetail would diminish it’s value. However, it would increase it’s utility and value to me. I’m not a collector nor, do I buy to resell. However, I do feel a strong sense of responsibility-more like a caretaker than an owner.
I would appreciate any input.

Your Model 64 was manufactured in the year 1948, and the Lyman No. 56W would be the correct receiver peep sight for it. Adding this sight will not diminish or negatively affect the value as long as you retain the original sight. You will need to find a Lyman dovetail slot filler and the No. 56W sight.
