i beg to differ, a 1957 stock going onto a 1972 action, c’mon, tolerances are allowable.the pistol grip cap IS time era correct
deluxe, please see photo
I thought your original post was asking if Winchester made this deluxe 64a. I don’t think the Winchester Repeating Arms grip cap would be correct for the 70s. If the gun has a 1950s modified stock on it, I don’t think Winchester put it there.
All 64A had a plastic butt plate, . it’s tighter than the pictures show. let’s ask Bert, one more time. “Per” Bert ,,,,,i would refer to your winchester as a “Model 64a” “Deer rifle”,
all 64 model owners and collectors will know , the “Deer rifle” option is the Non-used term “deluxe ” options,
Thank you Bert , for all your research, and acknowledging a unique first year production, 64A,
I’ve learned alot from you in 1 years past.
I own no less than 200 Lever action winchester rifles, carbines, and muskets.
Glad to have a strong team , behind you, in such knowledge and informative information,
BERT, Ihave a hell of alot more ser# and rifle/carbine configurations available for you.
Please all, stay in touch you all.

I have a rather long list of Winchester models that I am surveying, and I welcome all new information from Winchester collectors. Please get in touch with me as time permits to discuss what you have in greater detail.

64A(standard uncheckered wood only) having checkered wood with pistol grip cap but the screw-in (non-inletted) swivel stud in stock, and forend cap with the swivel hole built into it is just very unusual. I’m not sure what the consensus here is yet so will follow this thread.

I’m speculating the consensus is that this rifle is very unusual. If Winchester reached back into their inventory of unused parts from the Model 64 to make this special rifle up, it is going to look unusual – that is, not like anything we have seen before. Let me ask this: how does this rifle look different from a rifle that someone took a M64A and used parts from a M64? Could you duplicate this?
Steve, as we know the checkered stock isn’t from a standard M64 or 64A. I guess if somebody can confirm the checkering is 100% Winchester, that would be a plus, but why it would have the ad on after sling studs if it’s deer rifle wood, Would Winchester forget to do the stud inlets on one? Might be as a sb suggested. ??
Still a nice gun, but with a story.

Maybe they just grabbed that rear swivel out of a parts bin? It is a mystery and the swivel situation is hard for me to make sense of. If Mr. Renneberg is around, it would be nice to have his opinion on this rifle.
I don’t want to be negative about the gun because it is a very nice rifle. I guess each individual can believe what he wants to believe, maybe the owner/author can advise if those are OEM studs. Sounds like he has a good knowledge base and is very familiar with Winchester’s owning many as he stated.
It certainly is an odd one and maybe we will never know for sure unless somebody can identify or confirm another one they’ve seen or documented. ??
