Don,

Yes, I do believe that Winchester made up a large batch of 219 Zippers barrels in 1937 & 1938.  Thus far, I have found barrel dates “36”, “37”, “38”, and “40” on 219 Zipper barrels, with the vast number of them being “37”. That stated, I have not been able to very more than a handful of them that were manufactured in the years 1946 – 1948. Hopefully, as my research survey progresses, I will get the chance to verify more barrel dates.

Please tell your Dad thank you for me, and thanks to you as well.  I very much appreciate taking it apart to verify the date.

I just confirmed that serial# 1667980 does have a crowned muzzle.  I honestly have never seen a Model 64 without a crowned muzzle.  Do they exist?

Don,

They certainly do… I have surveyed lots of them, and looked at several today at the Big Reno show. Based on my research survey, all of the Model 64s made through 1937 have a flat uncrowned muzzle. Beginning in 1938, there is a mixture of the two types, and by 1940, the vast majority of them have crowned muzzles.

Interesting–thanks Bert.  Dad does have another Model 64 in the safe–I believe it’s an early 1930’s serial number in 30 WCF.  I see him this weekend and I’ll have him pull it out so I can send you the details for your survey.
