I have a 1929 model 55 (serial number #1056XXX). I am wondering whether the checkering is original or not, and if there is a set ‘Winchester checkering pattern’.

Any advice would be appreciated. I have included photos in this link:

Many thanks.

The checkering does not appear to be original.

Winchester typically used I-pattern checkering on plain grain walnut stocks, and H-pattern checkering on deluxe grain stocks.  The checkering pattern on your rifle does not match any of the Winchester patterns.

The checkering almost looks like it was done with a laser engraver. The checkering is awfully dark in my opinion to have been done with a normal hand checkering tool.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Thank you both Bert and Maverick.

Given the aftermarket checkering, what is the best way to tell if the rifle has also been reblued?

Thanks

Based on the pictures that you sent to me via email, it has definitely been buffed, polished, and reblued.
