I recently saw a Model 55 with two holes drilled and tapped left side for an aperture sight. I know the 64 was factory drilled for a receiver sight but I am thinking the 55 with the receiver sight holes would be a non factory addition unless possibly ordered that way. Is this correct?

That statement holds true for everything I have read, but there is no way to authenticate an original. I have one M55 and it has no holes. Personally, I would not touch one with holes in it.   Big Larry

Mike,

It is very unlikely that a Model 55 was factory drilled & tapped for a receiver mounted peep sight.  The vast majority of the receiver peep sights were not introduced until the mid 1930s, and the Model 55 was discontinued in 1932.  As for the Model 64, the early production specimens were not drilled & tapped.  It was in August of 1934 when Winchester began drilling & tapping the Model 64 as a standard feature.  The majority of the real early Model 64s were not drilled & tapped.

Thanks for the confirmation. I had my doubts that it was original especially since it is serial numbered in the separate model 55 range so I figured an early 55.
