A friend of mine has a model 1894 circa 1906 that has the special order trap door for a cleaning rod in the butt. The barrel length is standard 26″, take down , 1/2 octagon, 30 wcf. He is looking for an original cleaning rod for this. What would be the correct rod?
Thanks,
Al
Al,
The 1873 in 32 caliber didn’t have cleaning rods since the bore was small so a 30 caliber would have to been a custom made rod.

I have a ’94 circa 1926 with the trapdoor buttplate. I do not have the cleaning rod either but I have see none at the Louisville show a while back. It is a 5 piece rod and obviously not to heavy. Harry

I beleive 5-piece rod sets were for muskets?

My gun is a 26″ rnd. bbl. rifle in 30 cal. ser#992036, with the crescent trap door butt plate, the hole in the butt stock is 5 3/4″ deep. The gun I looked at in Louisville was of similar configuration, but a little earlier production with the same depth of hole in the stock. A 4 piece rod at app. 23″ long obviously would not be long enough to wipe the entire length of the bore. It would take the 5 piece rod at app. 27 1/2″ long in order to do this, that is providing the stock on my gun is original, which it is, with the depth of the hole in it at 5 3/4″. I believe the 26″ rifle took the same 5 piece cleaning rod as the musket, unless some one can shed a different light on the matter. Harry

Harry,
The standard musket 5 piece cleaning rod is 34 1/4″ long with each section 7″ long, the rifle used the same length rod so it would not fit in your gun with a 5 3/4″ hole. It had to been a custom made rod for that application. My guess is it was about 29″ assembled
