Newbie question I’m afraid.
I own a Model 1894 Winchester rifle in 32-40 made in 1910 based on the serial number.
It seems in good mechanical condition with the trigger holding half cock and full cock properly and it has a reasonably crisp let off.
I have no experience of any other lever action Winchester rifle but it is the only firearm I own which has quite a lot of fore and aft play in the trigger at half cock, full cock and at rest (fully down).
Is this normal or is there a spring that is missing, broken or deformed?
Nothing except the trigger rattles if I shake the gun. The trigger has no side to side movement.
Thanks in advance.

There are no missing, broken, or deformed springs on your 1894. At rest and half cock the trigger has a lot of play backwards and forwards, and at the full cock its got wiggle as well but more so from center to forward. This appears to be normal. You have to remember the trigger and trigger sear are two pieces connected by a pin through the lower tang, so while the hammer and mainspring provide tension against the trigger sear causing the trigger sear to rotate forward, the trigger itself is not under spring tension and can pivot freely on the trigger/sear pin whether at rest, half cock, or full cock.
