Brent,
Refinished Winchesters are a tough item to sell, especially when it comes to the Models 1892 and 1894. The vast majority of the serious Model 1892 collectors will not be interested in it at any price. For somebody looking for a very nice old “shooter” grade Model 1892, I suspect that $500 would be an agreeable price for most people. If it had been a 44 WCF vice a 32 WCF, the value would be a bit higher.

As well as most collectors know, there is a glut of finely refinished Winchesters out there, and some take an expert to tell. A couple years ago, my BIL bought a beautiful M53 44-40 in the $4,000 range. We took the rifle to the Reno show and it just so happened our table partner was Larry Shennum noted Winchester expert. He looked the rifle over and gave my BIL the bad news. It was refinished. They did a great job, but it didn’t fool Mr. Shennum. About broke my BILs heart. Another one we saw at a Vegas show was a very mint M1892 44-40 for $10,000. Fortunately, the man from Winchester was there and he called in the serial number. It came back as shipped as a 32-20. The seller was a very well known and respected dealer. You cannot win at this game folks. The fakers are very good at this. Big Larry
Hello Brent,
Yes the rifle is definitely refinished. The very faint, and almost missing proof marks are a dead give away to redone guns. These marks are originally quite shallow and then easily removed when the gun is buffed prior to re-bluing. They should look much closer to the attached photo. Could you please post a photo of the barrel address stamp and the upper tang so that I can enter that info into my survey of the 1892’s?
Thanks
Michael
