What year did Winchester start using the shorter tang on the crescent butt plates? I have a model 1873 in 38-40 with a 24″ round barrel, serial number 354384, which dates to around 1890. It has the longer (2.25″) tang with the trap door for cleaning rods. I thought they had switched prior to that year on the larger calibers. Thank you.

Your gun was made in 1890.  The change, longer to shorter, occurred between serial #’s 550,000 and 600,000 according to Jim Gordon.  Ser # 550,000 is a 1900 manufacture.
