To answer your question did you read the auction description where they tell exactly how the serial number was determined?

"Up for auction is a very high condition, 😮 rare and extremely desirable Winchester Model 1894" The Very high condition may be up for debate.

I have only seen a photo of this stamp but, the one I saw, the letters were done very neatly over the area where the serial number would have been. This example looks very sloopy. Does anyone on the forum have some better photos of this that they could post for comparison?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. 😀

Looks like my stamping technique when I was an apprentice tool & diemaker , but at least he got the letters right side up

It most certainly is not what I would call "Very high condition".

I just had to bust out laughing when I read the ‘very high condition’ and then saw the photos!

Quite surprising to me, someone has bid on it at $1795.

Why would they apply the WRACO if the serial number is still visible?

Did you read the description? The serial number is not still visable its been obscured. The had to use special methods to read it.

What I meant was, if Winchester applied the WRACO, and the serial number can been seen now via special means, wouldn’t the serial number have been visible or discernible before they obliterated it with the WRACO marking?

I’m guessing here, so correct me if I’m wrong, but back in the day the serial number was removed from sight to then-existing technology. So, Winchester went over the obliteration with the WRA CO stamp. Now, with modern forensics, we can discern what the number was originally, before the Winchester correction and before the original obliteration?

That is quite possible. I was thinking they might have been visible before the marking because you can see parts of some of the serial numbers in the photos. I am wondering if the WRACO mark might have been applied by the "Price Pirates" and not Winchester.

I think the order of stamping needs to be talked about

1. Winchester applied the original Serial Number to the rifle.

2. Someone used what looks like some sort of cross hatching stamp to make the original Serial Number unreadable to avoid something to do with warranty work.

3. Winchester then comes in and Stamps WRA CO over top of the cross hatching.

All three of these stampings could have been done by Winchester or the Cross hatching could have been done by a third party for reasons unknown.

IMHO
