I have a mint 1936 long tang M/71 deluxe that I had for many years but need the swivels and sling. I want it all to be as original and condition as the rifle. I believe the sling is 3/4″ but I may very well be wrong on that also. I have in the read in the posts somewhere that the Model 70 Supergrade used the same set up. I don’t know if there were any identifiable markings such as the Winchester brand with lightning letters on the sling etc. on the original equipment. Does anybody have information on this?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Len-

If you have not seen it, check the information and photos that Jeff posted in response to my related question a couple of months ago:

https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-rifles/correct-sling-for-pre-war-m70-target-rifle/

Lots of good information here.  And no, the old leather slings provided by Winchester do not have a maker’s brand (the factory contracted with several leather goods manufacturers) nor are they marked Winchester.

Best of luck,

Lou

I have to add one caveat to that old post regarding the slings and that is there ARE Winchester marked slings with the lightning font and circle (R) but they were produced post 1961 so they don’t have much bearing on the discussions around here or with your 71.

I just thought I would mention it because you will see them for sale occasionally, some new in the package but they are not correct for a pre-1961 rifle.

Thanks for the help! I have a much better understanding now regarding what to look for in order to keep it original as I can.
