The total production of the Model 53 was (or is listed as) 15,118 rifles. Currently, I have 1,137 (7.52%) of them documented in the survey. The caliber breakdown thus far is as follows;
Surveyed & Extrapolated Cartridge Chambering Totals | |||||
Caliber | 25-20 | 32 WCF | 44 WCF | ? | Total |
Quantity | 559 | 407 | 167 | 4 | 1,137 |
% | 49.16% | 35.80% | 14.69% | ||
Extrapolated Qty. | 7,433 | 5,412 | 2,220 | 15,118 |
As can be seen, the total number of Model 53 rifles manufactured in the 44 WCF caliber is estimated to be just 2,220. Of the 167 documented thus far, 44 of them are Take Downs.

Both very nice Big Larry. The 44-40 is a great acquisition. Congrats!!
Thanks, but that pic is just the 44-40. I don’t have one of the 32-20. Wish it was a little nicer, but it’s all I could find that hadn’t greyed out. Typical of that era when the receivers started to flake. I have ammo for it, but have yet to shoot it. My BIL’s would keep all his shots in the 10 ring at 100 yards. They are very accurate. Big Larry

Yes I meant both very nice additions, but especially the 44-40. Very typical flaking. I was lucky enough to find one with just a couple flakes on it. Your 44-40 is scarce and desirable.
