I have run across a fairly decent M1894 Rifle in 32-40 that appears to have a shotgun butt instead of the normal rifle butt.

Is this even possible as an original??  (I haven’t checked the serial number yet, but the owner says it is pre-1899)

Another question…. It has the 26″ octagon barrel, marked Winchester, but I didn’t see any chambering marking. I’m taking his word as it being a 32-40.

Thanks,

Dean

Dean,

A shotgun butt was a special order option for the Model 1894, and they are fairly common.

The caliber/cartridge marking is marked on the top flat of the octagon barrel right next to the frame ring.

Bert,

Thanks!  I will have to look again for the chambering marking. I didn’t see any in that area, but I may have missed it.
